아뜰리에 작의 작업에는 ‘작’이라는 가상의 인물이 등장합니다. 정장영과 안드레아스 가이셀하르트가 2006년 결성한 이 아티스트 듀오는, 10여 년 동안 ‘작’을 중심으로 끝나지 않는 이야기를 이어왔습니다. 두 작가는 이 이야기를 통해 우리가 무언가를 보고, 그것이 무엇인지 알아가며 의미를 만들어가는 과정에 주목합니다.

〈컷투: 어두운 표정을 한 채…〉는 아뜰리에 작이 직접 쓴 시나리오 속 “With a dark expression on her face…”, 우리말로 ‘어두운 표정을 한 채…’라는 문장을 도자 조각으로 바꾼 작품입니다. 영문 알파벳 하나하나를 중심축을 따라 돌려 입체적인 형태로 만들었습니다.

작품 가까이에서 각각의 형태를 살펴보세요. 처음에는 낯선 조각처럼 보이지만, 형태의 규칙을 발견하면 다시 알파벳으로 보이고 하나의 문장으로 읽히기 시작합니다. 이처럼 작품은 보는 것과 알아보는 것 사이에 작은 어긋남을 만듭니다. 작가들은 바로 그 틈에서 새로운 의미가 생겨난다고 봅니다.

작품 뒤의 검은 벽은 현미경 슬라이드와 같은 비율로 만들어졌습니다. 이는 눈앞의 도자 조각을 하나하나 관찰하고 해석하도록 이끕니다. 제목의 ‘컷투’는 영화에서 한 장면에서 다른 장면으로 넘어가는 것을 뜻합니다. 이 작품도 이야기 전체를 설명하지 않고 하나의 장면과 단서만을 남깁니다. 그 앞뒤의 이야기는 관람객 각자의 경험과 기억을 통해 서로 다르게 이어집니다.

atelierJAK’s work features a fictional character named JAK. Formed in 2006 by Jangyoung Jung and Andreas Geisselhardt, the duo has developed an ongoing, open-ended story around JAK for more than a decade. Through this story, they explore how we see something, recognize what it is, and make meaning from it.

CUT TO: With a dark expression on her face… transforms a line from a script written by atelierJAK into ceramic sculptures. The line reads, “With a dark expression on her face…” Each letter is rotated around its central axis and turned into a three-dimensional form.

Take a closer look at each of the forms. At first, they may look like unfamiliar sculptures. But once you notice the pattern, they begin to appear as letters again and can be read as a sentence. In this way, the work creates a slight gap between seeing and recognizing. The artists believe that new meaning emerges within that gap.

The black wall behind the work has the same proportions as a microscope slide, encouraging viewers to examine and interpret each ceramic form. The title CUT TO is a film term used when moving from one scene to another. Likewise, this work does not tell the whole story, but leaves us with just one scene and a few clues. What comes before and after can unfold differently for each viewer, shaped by their own experiences and memories.
