Varvara & Mar is an artist duo formed in 2009 by Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet Sola. They use digital technology and audience participation to explore the relationship between human perception and technology.

Visions of Destruction combines AI image-generation technology with an eye-tracking system, responding in real time to where the viewer looks. As you look at the landscape on the screen, the area under your gaze becomes polluted and damaged. When you look away, the damaged landscape begins to recover. Because the screen changes according to where each viewer looks, the work is not a fixed image but a continuously changing scene.

In this work, viewers do more than simply look at the screen. Looking itself becomes an action that changes the image, allowing viewers to experience how their own gaze affects the environment. In this way, the work turns the act of looking from passive observation into a question of responsibility. As you watch destruction and recovery repeat across the screen, consider how human actions affect ecosystems and what responsibility comes with that impact.
