Unearthing the Body Between Bones, 2025
Porcelain, metal, resin, hand-building, welding, performance (Live or Documentation Video), 1260℃, 200 x 200 x 150cm.
This project consists of three installation works based on contemporary ceramics, together with a performance video. At the heart of the work is an interest in the precision and delicacy inherent in ceramic material, and at the same time in its structural fragility—its tendency to break easily. Through these qualities of ceramics, Leung Ching Man Calis seeks to reveal the body's vulnerability and dependency, and its state of constant readjustment, without relying on direct symbolism or explanation.
The work grew out of her own long period of physical rehabilitation following partial paralysis. Rather than being presented as a personal narrative, however, this experience functions as a new lens through which to view the process of making ceramics. For the artist, rehabilitation is a process in which the body is continually readjusted through repetition, correction, measurement, and calibration. This resembles the process of making ceramics itself, in which clay is shaped and compressed, dried while resting against supports, and then evaluated and revised after firing.
