[The 7th Beautiful Korean Ceramics Competition] Yoon, Jung, Round
ENG
Working with the sanggam (inlay) technique—carving patterns into the ceramic surface and filling them with clay of a contrasting color—Yoon Jung explores new formal qualities by introducing variations in motif and form to this familiar method. The repeatedly incised, irregular, and abstract motifs harmonize with the natural color and refined texture of the clay, generating a fresh aesthetic while retaining the lingering resonance of tradition. The vessels begin as controlled, wheel-thrown forms; the artist then applies white slip to make them more delicate before reshaping the clay body. Minimizing all other elements, she leaves only the characteristics of the materials and techniques. Through this restraint and transformation, she focuses on the essence of traditional techniques and materials while honing her distinct formal sensibility.
