The Hermannsburg Potters are a collective of Indigenous women artists based in Ntaria, in Australia’s Northern Territory. Their ceramics carry stories of Country, everyday life with family and community, and cultural knowledge passed down through generations. Here, Country means more than land. It is a place and a network of relationships connecting ancestors, nature, language, memory, and community life.

This exhibition brings together works by nine artists. They build each form by rolling clay into long coils and stacking them by hand, then paint desert landscapes, animals, and scenes of family and community life in vivid colors. Look for red mountains, birds, camels, cars, and people across the vessels. On the lids, small clay figures of animals, people, and vehicles extend the painted stories into three dimensions.

Listen, too, to the voices accompanying the animation that fills the space. Narration in Western Arrernte and moving images extend the landscapes and stories on the ceramics throughout the gallery.

A short documentary featuring Hayley Panangka Coulthard shows her collecting clay directly from the land and river where she lives and using it to make pottery. Her work carries stories of her mother’s Country, bush foods, and medicinal plants, passing traditional knowledge to the next generation.

As ceramics, painting, language, and clay come together in one space, consider how the Hermannsburg Potters use ceramics to carry forward the memories and everyday life of Country and community.
