[Chapter.3] Megumi Naitoh

[Chapter.3] Megumi Naitoh

ENG

0:00 / 0:00

Megumi Naitoh combines clay with stop-motion animation, turning the process of making ceramics into a story. She calls this approach Ceramation. By combining the ceramic-making process with stop-motion animation, she shows clay moving and transforming as it gradually takes shape.

In these animations, clay appears almost like a character. In particular, “Yellow Clay” represents the artist herself. In Love, Yellow Clay and White Clay come together to form a single ceramic object. The two clays represent Naitoh and her partner, who spend much of their time living apart. Their coming together reflects a relationship that continues across different backgrounds and distance.

In the new work Mud Processor, Yellow Clay needs to make a vessel but finds itself short of materials. It turns to software called “Mud Processor,” using discarded glaze and leftover clay to create a new vessel. By finding new ways to work with the materials available, the piece invites us to think about reuse and more sustainable ways of making. As you watch the two videos, follow how the clay moves and changes frame by frame, gradually taking shape. The finished ceramic object is only one part of the work. The process and time involved in making it are part of the work as well. In both works, clay is not simply a material. It becomes a main character that moves, transforms, and creates its own story.
