[Chapter.3] Kleinian

[Chapter.3] Kleinian

If someone discovered these stones as artifacts thousands of years from now, what might they learn about us? Kleinian combines rock, sound, and digital technology to explore where an ancient material meets contemporary technology. After years of working primarily on screen, he turned to stone as a way to bring digital images into physical space. By transferring images onto the surfaces of the stones and combining them with electronic components and sound, he brings together the enduring material of stone and rapidly changing technology.

Sonic Iterations traces the evolution of music-making from prehistory to the present through four stones. Through images and sounds from different eras, the stones follow a progression from primal rhythms made with hands and stone, through classical and electronic music, to AI-generated sound. Take a closer look at the surfaces of the stones, then listen to the sound through the headphones beside each one.

As Kleinian says, “Even computers were once rock.” However rapidly music and technology may change, they are still grounded in materials that come from the earth. Sonic Iterations connects the distant past with an unknown future, inviting us to imagine what traces today’s technology and culture might leave behind.
