<침묵 속 기억의 소용돌이>, 2025

라우 얏와이의 작업은 영상과 도자라는 두 매체를 통해 기억이 어떻게 남고, 흐려지고, 다시 구성되는지를 탐구합니다. 영상에서는 소성하지 않은 점토 작품을 물속에 담가 서서히 녹아내리고 무너지는 과정을 기록하고, 도자 작업에서는 일상의 사물을 실제와 구분하기 어려울 만큼 정교하게 재현한 뒤 그 표면을 두터운 용암 유약으로 덮습니다. 서로 다른 두 방식은 모두 재료가 변화하는 과정 자체를 통해 기억의 성질을 드러낸다는 점에서 연결됩니다. 녹아내리는 점토와 표면을 뒤덮는 유약은 서로 다른 방식으로 기억을 이야기합니다. 하나는 사라지고 해체되는 기억을, 다른 하나는 새로운 경험이 겹쳐지면서 끊임없이 다시 쓰이는 기억을 보여줍니다. 영상과 도자 작업은 서로를 비추며, 형태를 붙잡으려는 마음과 결국 변화할 수밖에 없는 기억 사이의 긴장을 드러냅니다.

Lau Yat Wai's work, through the two mediums of video and ceramics, explores how memory is retained, blurred, and reconstructed. In the video work, he records unfired clay sculptures submerged in water, slowly dissolving and collapsing; in the ceramic work, he reproduces everyday objects with a precision that makes them nearly indistinguishable from the real thing, then covers their surface with a thick lava glaze. These two different approaches are connected in that both reveal the nature of memory through the very process of the material's transformation.
The dissolving clay and the glaze that covers the surface each speak of memory in their own way. One shows memory that disappears and comes apart; the other shows memory that is ceaselessly rewritten as new experiences layer over it. The video and the ceramic work illuminate each other, revealing the tension between the wish to hold on to form and a memory that, in the end, cannot help but change.
