Beyond the mountains <beyond the="" mountains="">, 2025
Celadon glaze, acrylic panel, molding, polishing, 1300℃, 140 x 53 x 70cm.
《Beyond the mountains》 begins with traditional celadon and expands its materials and mode of expression in a contemporary way. Its most distinctive feature is that celadon glaze is not simply applied to the surface of a vessel but is directly shaped into a form of its own. Through this, Jiang Shaoqing experiments with a new sculptural method he calls "glaze-shaping."
The work fully reveals the subtle tone, thickness, and glassy material quality of celadon glaze. The tension created by thin and thick sections, together with the contrast between the depth of the blue and the delicate texture of the surface, lets us see celadon glaze—something so familiar—as an independent sculptural material in its own right.
Formally, the celadon glaze itself becomes the skeleton of the work, and its blue tone becomes its central image. Through this, he reconstructs the spirit of East Asian landscape painting in an abstract way. Rather than reproducing the actual appearance of mountains, he seeks to hold within the work the stillness and depth one feels when gazing at a landscape, along with the vitality and resilience inherent in nature.
