오래된 빌라의 현관이나 골목을 걷다 보면 여러 개의 화분과 받침대, 철판이나 사다리 같은 물건들이 한데 모여 있는 자리를 볼 수 있습니다. 정성스럽게 가꾼 정원이라기보다는 잠시 놓아둔 것들이 그대로 남아 만들어진 풍경에 가깝습니다.
변지원 작가는 이러한 골목의 풍경에서 정성스럽게 가꿔진 정원과 방치된 공간 사이의 모호한 상태에 주목합니다. 《임시정원》에서는 이러한 임시 구조물 가운데 ‘사다리’가 작품의 중심이 됩니다. 본래 특정한 용도로 만들어진 사다리는 이곳에서 식물의 성장을 지지하거나 그저 공간에 남겨진 채 풍경의 일부가 됩니다. 작가는 사용을 다한 것과 여전히 쓰이고 있는 것의 경계가 흐려진 이 사다리를 통해 돌봄과 방치가 동시에 존재하는 상태를 보여줍니다.
이 작품은 반복적으로 마주치는 작은 임시 정원의 모습을 통해, 누군가의 손길이 닿았던 흔적과 그 안에서도 계속해서 자라나는 생명에 대해 이야기합니다. 작가는 이러한 모습이 때로는 우리의 삶과도 닮아 있다고 바라봅니다. 보호받고 있는 듯 보이지만, 결국 각자의 자리에서 스스로 성장해야 하는 상태입니다. 《임시정원》은 이처럼 돌봄과 방치가 겹쳐진 환경 속에서도 이어지는 삶의 모습을 보여줍니다.

Walking through the entrance of an old villa or down a back alley, one sometimes comes across a spot where several flowerpots, stands, sheets of metal, or a ladder have gathered together. It looks less like a carefully tended garden than a landscape formed by things simply left behind.
Byun Jiwon focuses on this ambiguous state, found in such alley scenes, between a carefully tended garden and a neglected space. In 《Temporary Garden》, the "ladder" stands at the center among these makeshift structures. Originally made for a specific purpose, the ladder here either supports the growth of plants or is simply left in place, becoming part of the scenery. Through this ladder—where the line between what has served its purpose and what is still in use has blurred—she shows a state in which care and neglect exist side by side.
Through the recurring image of these small, Temporary Garden, the work speaks to the traces left by someone's touch and the life that keeps growing within them regardless. She sees this scene as sometimes resembling our own lives—looking protected, yet ultimately having to grow on our own, wherever we happen to be. 《Temporary Garden》 shows how life continues even within an environment where care and neglect overlap.
