멜리스 부이룩은 도자기를 다루며 자연의 흐름을 따라 모든 요소를 손으로 하나씩 빚어냅니다. 자연 속의 형태들은 얼핏 비슷해 보이지만, 자세히 들여다보면 저마다 다른 모습과 성질을 지니고 있습니다. 이러한 생각은 작가의 작업 방식에서 중요한 출발점이 됩니다.
작가는 이 지속적인 작업 시리즈를 〈서식지〉라고 부릅니다. 〈서식지〉에는 오랜 시간 여러 문화와 전통 속에서 중요한 역할을 해온 ‘카펫’의 이미지도 담겨 있습니다. 역사적으로 카펫은 종종 자연을 압축해 담아낸 상징적인 정원처럼 여겨졌습니다. 꽃과 식물, 자연의 풍경이 반복되는 패턴과 리듬, 표면의 장식으로 변환되어 펼쳐졌기 때문입니다. 작가는 이러한 전통에서 영감을 받아 카펫의 구성 방식을 도자 작업 속에 새롭게 풀어냅니다.
이처럼 작가는 도자기를 통해 ‘정원’이라는 오래된 개념을 다시 바라보고, 전통적인 이미지와 현대적인 조각 언어를 하나로 엮습니다. 그렇게 만들어진 작품은 유산과 상상력이 만나는 지점에 자리하며, 기억과 자연, 그리고 지금 이 순간이 함께 머무는 하나의 새로운 ‘서식지’를 만들어냅니다.

Melis Buyruk works with ceramics by shaping every element by hand, following the flow of nature. Forms found in nature may look similar at first glance, but on closer look each has its own distinct appearance and character. This idea becomes an important starting point in the artist's way of working.
She calls this ongoing series 〈Habitat〉. 〈Habitat〉 also carries the image of the "carpet," which has long played an important role across many cultures and traditions. Historically, carpets were often seen as symbolic gardens that condensed nature into a single surface, since flowers, plants, and natural landscapes were transformed into repeating patterns, rhythms, and surface ornament. Drawing inspiration from this tradition, she reworks the compositional logic of the carpet within her ceramic practice.
In this way, she revisits the age-old concept of the "garden" through ceramics, weaving traditional imagery together with a contemporary sculptural language. The resulting work sits at the point where heritage and imagination meet, creating a new "habitat" where memory, nature, and this present moment dwell together.
