《신성함을 공간화하기》는 수백 개의 도자기 조각으로 이루어진 설치 작품입니다. 엘리자 아우는 성당과 사원, 모스크처럼 종교적 의미를 지닌 공간의 건축과 장식에서 출발했습니다. 특정 종교를 가리키기보다는 서로 다른 문화권의 신성한 공간에서 공통적으로 발견되는 대칭과 방사형, 격자형 구조에 주목합니다. 티베트 만다라나 이슬람 타일 장식에서도 반복되는 이러한 패턴을 통해, 인류가 오래전부터 건축과 무늬를 통해 신성함과 초월의 개념을 이해해 왔다는 점을 환기합니다.
작품의 구조는 중국 둔황 석굴과 같이 종교적 수행과 명상을 위해 사용된 동굴형 공간에서도 영향을 받았습니다. 둔황 석굴의 벽면을 가득 채운 수많은 불상 이미지처럼, 이 작품에서도 형태의 반복이 중요한 역할을 합니다. 반복은 단순한 장식이 아니라 관람자의 시선을 집중시키고 명상적인 상태로 이끄는 장치가 됩니다. 각각의 도자기 조각에는 정사각형과 원의 형태가 사용되는데, 정사각형은 땅을, 원은 하늘을 상징합니다.

《Squaring the Circle》 is an installation made up of hundreds of ceramic fragments. Eliza Au began with the architecture and ornamentation of spaces carrying religious meaning, such as cathedrals, temples, and mosques. Rather than pointing to any specific religion, she focuses on the symmetry, radial patterns, and grid-like structures found in common across sacred spaces from different cultures. Through these recurring patterns—also seen in Tibetan mandalas and Islamic tile decoration—she calls to mind how humanity has long understood the concepts of sacredness and transcendence through architecture and pattern.
The structure of the work was also influenced by cave-like spaces used for religious practice and meditation, such as China's Dunhuang Grottoes. Just as the walls of the Dunhuang Grottoes are filled with countless images of the Buddha, the repetition of form plays an important role in this work as well. Repetition here is not mere decoration; it becomes a device that focuses the viewer's gaze and leads them into a meditative state. Each ceramic fragment incorporates the shapes of a square and a circle, where the square symbolizes the earth and the circle symbolizes the sky.
