김시영 작가는 흙과 불, 중력과 시간이 만들어내는 ‘변화’를 중심으로 흑유자기의 세계를 탐구합니다. 특히 장작가마 속 1,350°C 이상의 고온에서 불과 흙이 상호작용하며 색과 형태가 변화하는 ‘요변(窯變)’에 주목합니다. 서로 다른 지역의 흙을 사용하고, 흑자 유약과 가마 온도에 따른 발색 실험을 지속하며 다양한 색과 질감을 탐구합니다. 이는 대표작인 planet 시리즈를 통해 잘 드러납니다. <planet>은 흑유와 가마의 불이 만나 만들어내는 예측하기 어려운 색과 형태의 변화를 보여줍니다. 가마 안의 미세한 온도와 분위기, 작품의 위치에 따라 검은 표면 위로 여러 빛과 색이 나타나며, 고온에서 흙이 무너지거나 변형되는 과정 역시 작품의 형태를 결정하는 중요한 요소가 됩니다.

Syyoung Kim explores the world of black-glazed ceramics through the transformations brought about by clay, fire, gravity, and time. He is particularly interested in kiln transformations, in which clay and fire interact at temperatures above 1,350°C in a wood-fired kiln, producing changes in color and shape.
Working with clays from different regions, he continually experiments with black glazes and firing temperatures to explore a wide range of colors and textures. This approach is vividly expressed in his signature Planet Series. In Planet, the interaction of black glaze and fire in the kiln produces unpredictable variations in color and shape. Subtle differences in temperature and atmosphere within the kiln, as well as the placement of each piece, bring out diverse hues and tones across the black surfaces. The way the clay slumps or deforms at high temperatures also becomes an important factor in determining the shape of the vessel.
