Buncheong Tea Bowl with White Slip-brushed Design, 2026, Buncheong Clay, White slip, Iron, Wood ash glaze, Wheel work, Reduction firing, 17x17x8
Soojong Ree regards clay not simply as a material but as a foundation of life and part of nature, an outlook that has shaped his practice over many years. He places particular importance on repetitive labor and the process of working with clay itself. More recently, rather than using the potter’s wheel, he has turned to coiling, building up clay by hand to focus on its inherent material qualities and the process through which the vessel takes shape.
He then applies white slip and freely painted iron-brown decoration to the surface of the vessel, bringing out both the painterly qualities characteristic of buncheong with underglaze iron-brown decoration and the natural texture of the clay. He preserves the traces left by hand-coiling, adding vigorous brushstrokes in iron brown that allow the three-dimensional form of the vessel and its painterly expression to come together naturally.
