고대 로마 프레스코벽화에서 발견한 건축적 환영과 도자 조형을 결합하여 새로운 공간을 만들어낸 설치 작품입니다. 베티 우드만은 전통적인 화병의 형태를 해체하고 재구성하며 회화, 조각, 건축의 경계를 넘나드는 작업을 전개해왔습니다. 이 작품에서는 벽면에 배치된 평면적인 도판과 그 앞에 놓인 입체적인 화병 형태를 서로 연결하여, 평면의 이미지가 실제 공간으로 돌출되고, 입체의 형태가 다시 하나의 이미지로 이어지는 듯한 시각적 효과를 만들어냅니다. 강렬한 색채와 자유로운 형태의 도자 요소는 정원과 화병을 연상시키면서도 구체적인 재현을 넘어 회화적인 이미지로 작용하고 있습니다. 특히 벽과 바닥, 평면과 입체 사이의 빈 공간까지 작품의 일부로 끌어들이면서 실제 공간과 환영적 공간이 중첩되는 독특한 장면을 만들어냅니다.

This installation draws on the architectural illusionism of ancient Roman frescoes to create a new spatial experience through the interplay of two- and three-dimensional forms. Betty Woodman expanded the possibilities of ceramics by deconstructing and reconfiguring the traditional vase, combining elements of painting, sculpture, and architecture. Here, flat ceramic forms mounted on the wall are visually connected to three-dimensional vase-like objects placed in front of it, creating the illusion that painted images extend into physical space while the vessels become part of the surrounding image. Vivid colors and freely composed forms evoke gardens and vases while functioning as painterly elements rather than literal representations. By incorporating the wall, floor, and the space between flat and three-dimensional forms into the work, Woodman creates a distinctive setting in which actual and imagined spaces overlap.
