The ceramic-making process generates numerous defective pieces, and discarded ceramics do not readily decompose in nature. When left in the natural environment, such ceramic waste can place a lasting burden on the ecosystem. Focusing on the relationship between humans, human-made objects, and the natural environment, Kai Zhang collects broken, cracked, and flawed ceramics and gives them new forms and meanings. By bringing discarded objects back into the realm of art, the work raises questions about material circulation and sustainability.
