《Earth Makes》
The theme of the Gyeonggi Ceramics Biennale 2026 is “Earth Makes.” It begins with the fundamental question: “What if artworks were created not solely by human hands, but by the Earth itself?” Clay is a material of the Earth, already embedded with geological time and events, while fire serves as a medium that activates this past in the present. This exhibition redefines ceramics not as passive materials waiting to be shaped, but as “thinking partners” that actively respond and interact through heat, gravity, and chemical reactions—proposing a process of “co-authorship” between humanity and the Earth.
The biennale expands the meaning of ceramics from microscopic transformations of materials to cultural forms shaped by local environments, and further to future possibilities in conjunction with AI. It presents ceramics not merely as individual creations, but as cultural outcomes formed over time through the interplay of geography, community, and history. Moving beyond human-centered creation, the exhibition proposes a new aesthetic and ethical perspective based on coexistence and collaboration with the Earth. It invites audiences to reconsider the materials beneath our feet and to imagine a shared future together.
