Living Legacy : Masters of Korean Ceramics Today is an exhibition that brings together and comprehensively highlights works by masters who represent the field of contemporary Korean ceramics, including Korea’s Master Artisans, holders of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and regional master artisans. Through this exhibition, we seek to explore the profound aesthetic value and craftsmanship inherent in traditional Korean ceramics, while re-examining the meaning and value of traditional ceramics in contemporary society. Furthermore, within the ever-expanding global current of Hallyu arts, the exhibition aims to present the future potential of Korean ceramics.
Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum presents Our History Through Ceramics, a collection exhibition that offers an overview of the development of ceramic culture on the Korean Peninsula. Through major works from the museum’s collection, the exhibition highlights the history, traditions, techniques, and significance of Korean ceramics from the Goryeo period to the present day.
Gallery 1 presents the development of porcelain culture on the Korean Peninsula at a glance. It introduces Goryeo celadon, as well as the transformation and characteristics of Joseon-period buncheong ware and white porcelain. The exhibition also helps visitors understand the transition from inlaid celadon to buncheong ware, the coexistence of buncheong ware and white porcelain, and the types and aesthetic characteristics of white porcelain.
Gallery 2 is organized under the themes of “White Porcelain in Daily Life,” “Ceramics of Gyeonggi-do,” and “Modern and Contemporary Traditional Ceramics.” “White Porcelain in Daily Life” explores the uses of ceramics for various purposes, including everyday life and rituals, offering insight into and empathy with the sentiments and refined way of life of our ancestors. “Modern and Contemporary Traditional Ceramics” introduces the traditions of Korean ceramics that were preserved amid difficult circumstances following the privatization of Bunwon. Through this, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the “beauty of nature as it is,” passed down from our ancestors.
This special exhibition connects contemporary ceramic art with the art market, highlighting both its expanding possibilities and commercial potential. It seeks to reposition ceramic craft from “everyday craft” to “contemporary art,” and—through collaboration with Designhouse Co, Ltd.—to establish a pathway into the art market based on the museum’s specialized curatorial expertise in ceramics.
Under the theme “Korean Ceramics, Yet Unfamiliar,” the exhibition focuses on relatively lesser-known genres such as Earthenware, Goryeo Glazed Celadon, White porcelain painted with iron, and Buncheong ware painted with iron. By doing so, it moves beyond the conventional focus on celadon and white porcelain, presenting the diversity of Korean ceramics and their potential for contemporary interpretation.
The exhibition features approximately 60 to 100 works by five to six contemporary ceramic artists. These works are presented across two venues—the museum and Gallery Jiuheon operated by Designhouse—creating a dual structure that connects viewing with acquisition. Through this approach, the exhibition aims to broaden public perception of Korean ceramics and enhance their accessibility for both domestic and international audiences.
